At Encore Village, the stories of our residents are a beautiful blend of resilience, wisdom, and new beginnings.

For Carol V., moving here wasn’t just a lifestyle change—it was a conscious choice to live fully, learn constantly, and find joy in every day.

At 78 years old, Carol had already experienced life in a large home as a single mother of three young daughters, a townhouse, and most recently, a condo. But when it came time to think about her next chapter, she knew she didn’t want the responsibility of homeownership again.

Having witnessed the exceptional care and vibrant lifestyle her mother and aunt experienced at Encore Village, Carol began to seriously consider senior living.

Around the same time, she was attending lifelong learning classes at Roosevelt University—and that’s when everything clicked. “I found out Encore Village has a collaboration with Roosevelt University,” she recalls. “And I love to learn new things every day.”

For Carol, that discovery felt like a sign. She was also drawn to the fitness center, the pool, and the reliable community bus that provides transportation to appointments. And when she asked one of her daughters for input—despite Encore being farther from her—her daughter simply said: “Go where you’ll be happiest.”

That’s exactly what Carol did.

Where Every Day Is Alive with Energy and Friendship

“This is truly the friendliest place,” Carol says. “Encore Village is still the only community I’ve seen where there’s activity all throughout the day.”

Whether it’s a simple hello from a neighbor, staff calling her by name, or the welcoming atmosphere in new groups she tries, Carol has found Encore Village to be a place of both familiarity and exploration.

She loves that group leaders help residents ease into new activities and that every restaurant on campus offers its own distinct flair and menu. “There’s so much variety—and people are genuinely helpful and warm.”

Care You Can Feel

For Carol, what makes the community truly special is the people behind it. “The staff here are caring, warm, and helpful,” she says. “They always have a smile, say hello to everyone they pass, and somehow remember all our names—which isn’t easy in a community this big!”

And it’s not just the daily kindness—it’s the peace of mind. “They show up on short notice when you need something. It makes all the difference.”

Looking Back—And Forward—with Gratitude

When reflecting on her decision to move in, Carol shares, “The only thing I wish I had known is how happy I’d be eight years later.”

Encore Village has become the place where all her needs—intellectual, spiritual, and social—are met. “Even though my wonderful family is around, I just couldn’t see myself anywhere but here.”

And now, as the seasons shift, she’s looking forward to one of her favorite traditions: sitting in the gardens. “You can read a book in a different garden every day,” she says. “Relaxing in the peacefulness, looking at the flowers and the sky… just feeling thankful to be alive and enjoying the time.”

A Gift to Her Family, Too

“Moving here is a gift to our children,” Carol adds thoughtfully. “They don’t have to worry about us living alone. There aren’t strangers knocking at the door, and they’re informed if there’s an emergency. It’s a relief for them to know we’re safe and happy.”

At Encore Village, Carol V. has found so much more than a place to live—she’s found a place to flourish.
