When someone you love starts needing more help, whether it’s with daily tasks or ongoing health concerns, it can be hard to know where to turn. Some families think, “Maybe we can bring in help at home.” Others wonder if it might be time to look into a care facility.

It’s a situation that many families face: wanting to do the right thing, ensuring their parent or spouse is safe and cared for, while also trying to balance their own life and responsibilities.

Since Encore Village offers both home care and in-community care, we work with families every day, like this one, who are weighing their options.  We understand the benefits of each and how they can support different stages of life.

Today, we decided to share them here with you, in the hope that it will help you get a better idea of what these care options actually look like, how they differ, and how to determine which one might be the best fit for your loved one right now.

What Is Home Care?

Home care usually means a trained caregiver comes to your loved one’s residence—whether that’s a house or an independent living apartment—to provide help with day-to-day things. That might include getting dressed, preparing meals, taking medications on time, or just offering companionship and conversation during the day.

At Encore Village, we offer Encore at Home, a service that supports residents who want to remain in their apartments or cottages but need a little extra help to do so safely and comfortably.

Home care can work really well when someone is still fairly independent but could use assistance a few hours a day or a few times a week. It allows them to stay in a familiar space while getting the care they need to stay healthy and engaged.

What Is In-Community Care?

In-community care — typically offered in Life Plan Communities or Continued Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) —means moving into a senior living community that’s built around more consistent support and offers assisted living services such as skilled nursing, memory care, or long-term rehabilitation. At Encore Village, all of these options are available on our campus, and the level of care is tailored to the individual.

When your care needs become more complex—whether it’s due to chronic illness, mobility changes, memory loss, or frequent medication management—it may no longer be safe or practical to rely on occasional support at home. In-community care offers the kind of structure, trained staff, and immediate response that home care might not be able to provide.

Some families also find that when they no longer have to worry about caregiving logistics every day, they can return to being emotionally present. You get to go back to being a daughter or spouse again, not just a caregiver.

So, How Do You Know What’s Right?

This is where things can feel hard. You want to respect your loved one’s independence, but you also want to make sure they’re safe and well cared for.

Ask yourself:

  • Are they managing okay on their own between caregiver visits?
  • Are they eating regularly, taking medications properly, and getting around the house safely?
  • Have there been any falls or close calls recently?
  • Are they becoming isolated, anxious, or forgetful?
  • Is the person helping them at home (maybe that’s you) starting to feel overwhelmed?

If you’re nodding along to some of these, it might be time to think about whether in-community care could offer a better balance of safety and support.

You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone

One of the things families appreciate about Encore Village is that we offer both home care and in-community care. That means you don’t have to make a huge leap all at once.

We can start with in-home services through Encore at Home and adjust as needs evolve. If and when a transition to assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing becomes the right next step, we’re right here—already familiar with your loved one and ready to help them feel at home.

We don’t believe in cookie-cutter solutions. We take the time to understand your loved one, your family, and your hopes for what the next chapter could look like.
